Project Description:

The Peacock Tract Public Arts Project is a mural series that is influenced by the rich history and greater vision of this community. The area known as Peacock Tract is nestled along the last mile & a half of the “Selma to Montgomery Historic March Trail.” It is immersed in history from the routes of the first citywide electric street trolley system nicknamed the “Lightning Route,” to the telegram that ordered the bombardment of Fort Sumter sent from the Winter Building, and the meeting that appointed Martin Luther King Jr. as the leader of the M.I.A. at the Mount Zion A.M.E. Memorial Church.

Like many urban communities of similar history, Peacock Tract has its challenges from lack of access to healthy food, job training/employment and economic development. There are initiatives in place such as the community garden and health awareness programs at Pure Artistry Outreach that are working to rebuild this community. Our overall goal in this project is help bring awareness of the community, stimulate interest in community development, social construction and beautification to drive tourism, attract businesses and ultimately enhance the quality of life.

We believe this Public Arts Project will be tell the story of this community and help further these community initiatives.
