2025 ARTIST IN RESIDENCY ARTIST CALL

14 Apr 2025 3:25 PM | Kalonji Gilchrist (Administrator)

OVERVIEW

21 Dreams Arts & Culture collective is led by experienced creatives with deep roots in the arts community. Our principal artists and collaborators are experts in various fields, including visual arts, music, literary arts, and community engagement. The team has demonstrated success in arts programming, with a strong track record of fostering creativity, education, and cultural development in Montgomery and beyond.

In partnership with the Civil Rights Memorial Center (CRMC), The Power of Place: Artist Residency, we will accept applications from similarly experienced, active, and trained artists. We are seeking artists who have the education, training or equivalent experience in art exhibitions, performance, and writing.

The Power of Place: Artist Residency at the Civil Rights Memorial Center will provide a unique opportunity for artists to deeply engage with the historical significance of the Deep South and immerse themselves in the complex legacies of enslavement, Jim Crow, and the ongoing impact of the Civil Rights Movement on Black communities. Through this residency, participants will have the space and support to explore how these historical and underrepresented narratives continue to shape their artistic practices and personal identities.

GOAL

The residency aims to bring together and showcase talented BIPOC artists from along the Great Migration route. The residency program seeks to encourage collaboration among artists to produce art that captures and preserves the cultural and historical stories related to the fight for racial equality. This will culminate in the "Art is Activism Block Party," an event that will feature the artists' creations and provide a platform for meaningful discussions, introspection, community involvement, and advocacy.

ELIGIBILITY

Residency opportunities are open to visual and performing artists 21+ years of age who show a strong professional working history. Applicants working in, but not limited to, visual arts, such as painters, graphic designers, or filmmakers, and performing arts, such as poets, singer/songwriters, musicians, or dancers, will be strongly considered.

Applicants for this cohort must be residents in the following Southern states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

REWARDS

Awarded artists-in-residence receive a $2,000.00 stipend, paid travel and lodging during the 10-Day residency, ground transportation, and meals. Artists will also have the opportunity to create commissioned works for The Great Migration exhibition project.
